THE BILL & BARBARA MCMILLAN
DUAL CREDIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
CHANGING THE FUTURE BY BREAKING THE MOLD

In 2013, Tyler Junior College began a partnership with the Van ISD Education Foundation to help us provide dual credit college courses for qualifying economically disadvantaged students at Van High School. TJC reduces the cost of each course by fifty percent and the Foundation pays for the remaining half. This remarkable opportunity helps our students who would struggle to pay for college get a jump start on higher education and earn college credits while they are still attending Van High School.
DUAL CREDIT PROGRAM HISTORY
PROGRAM STATS
When this program began in 2013, the Foundation helped 3 students earn 4 credit hours for a total cost of $700. Since then, the program has grown exponentially! For the 2016-2017 school year, we were able to help 44 students earn 378 credit hours to the tune of over $12,000! Van ISD's ‘After High School Comes College’ initiative truly is having an impact on our students who are now realizing college really is an option for them!

After seeing a report on this program in August of 2018, Barbara McMillan reached out to the Foundation and generously offered to fund the Foundation's expense of this ever growing program in memory of her late husband Bill McMillan. She and Mr. McMillan have always been strong advocates for education and held firm to the belief that education is the great equalizer. We are incredibly humbled and thankful for Mrs. McMillan's generosity as well as her and Mr. McMillan's belief that each and every child deserves the opportunity for a better future through higher education.
THE GIFT OF A GENEROUS HEART
THE CASE FOR DUAL CREDIT

Research shows that low income, first generation college students are nearly FOUR TIMES more likely to leave higher education after the first year than more advantaged peers. However, studies indicate that students who participate in dual credit programs in high school have higher GPA's, a higher rate of college enrollment, a higher rate of persistence in college, and a higher rate of degree attainment.
HOW VAN ISD EMPLOYEES SUPPORT THE FOUNDATION
Over 240 Van ISD employees choose to contribute anywhere from $5 to $100 of EACH paycheck to the Foundation via automatic payroll deduction. Their support allows us to fund our innovative classroom grant program as well as our college scholarship program for Van High School graduating seniors heading off to college. Will you follow their lead?
